Last year, Rod Blagojevich was convicted and sentenced to fourteen years in prison for a thought crime. Before he even acted on his impulses to sell Barack Obama’s vacant senate seat to the highest bidder, he opened his mouth and said, “I’ve got this thing and it’s fucking golden.”
It was golden.
But just like Icarus, he flew too close to the sun.
I think about Blagojevich every time I hear about bloggers who attempt to bully and intimidate vendors, advertisers or marketing agencies.
I’ve got an audience. I have followers. I have influence. I have power.
You don’t have anything if you have to tell people. Just look at Rod Blagojevich. The minute he opened his mouth, it was over.
So I want to remind my blogging brethren that power and influence are tricky things. When you have it, be smart about it. A blogger may endorse products, write reviews, advertise, market and promote products and services. That’s a big job and there are rules. Be kind. Be judicious. Be as transparent as possible.
And don’t even think about bullying vendors, advertisers or marketing agencies into giving you money, status or access to other revenue-generating opportunities.
You’ve got this thing. Your blog. It’s fucking golden. Don’t waste it. And don’t break the law.
