Calling in Gay: December 10th

by

gayDecember 10th is International Human Rights Day — and David Craig is encouraging you to ‘call in gay‘ and choose volunteerism instead of work.

From the website:

On December 10, 2008 the gay community will take a historic stance against hatred by donating love to a variety of different causes. You are not encouraged to call in sick to work. You are encouraged to call in “gay” and donate your time to service!

It’s tough to argue with the fact that gays & lesbians have an enormous impact in the workforce an in our economy. Gay & lesbian colleagues drive diversity and inclusion in the workforce; they have made it easier for unmarried heterosexual couples to acquire health insurance from employers. I personally believe that gay rights are human rights; however, calling in gay to work seems like an ineffective and dated way to support social justice in America.

From the website:

  • Gay people and our allies are compassionate, sensitive, caring, mobilized, and programmed for success. A day without gays would be tragic because it would be a day without love.

Here is where I’m rolling my eyes, yo. Gay people are practical, business-savvy Americans who can take action without appealing to love, sentimentality, or ancient Greek literature. We can call in gay on December 10th — and alienate our employers and impact the economy — or we can operate in a more thoughtful and aggressive way to isolate businesses and politicians who are biased, stupid, and homophobic.

What do you think? Are you calling in gay on Wednesday?
