Meaninful Work, Purpose, and Skill

by

I think most career advisers get meaning and purpose confused. Here’s what I think.

  • You want meaningful work? Find your purpose.

Purpose involves passion, to some extent, but I think it involves skill. I am not passionate about Human Resources, but I’m good at my job. I have some skills. I think my purpose in this world is to help people make sense of work.

Is it my passion?

No way.

Sorry.

That’s not how I’m built.

I am passionate about cats, my family, and social justice. I am paid to give career advice, just like a plumber is paid to fix a leaky sink.  I use the money to pursue my passions. I think that’s okay. My life has meaning. I have a purpose. What more could I ask for?

What more do you want?
