Professional Slumps & Blessings

Who’s in a bit of a slump right now?

Answer: everyone.

I have an inbox full of email messages from readers and friends who are struggling. Maybe it’s the winter blues. Maybe you’re not getting enough exercise. Who the hell knows? I just know that your crap stories are contagious and now I’m in a bit of a slump, too.

I thought I would give us all a list of things to think about.

  1. We don’t live in Libya. No matter how depressing our days feel, we are not politically oppressed.
  2. Job creation still lags. Since no one is making a ton of money, it’s time to focus on more important things than work. Relationships. Friendships. Your marriage. There’s never been a better time to get some perspective and get a hobby.
  3. The weather sucks all over the world, right now, but a little UV sunlight and fresh air — even when it’s snowing or cloudy — is a good thing. Take five minutes, step away from the computer, and go outside.

Work sucks. Your boss is a jerk. That mole is suspicious. I get it. But you don’t have to believe in Baby Jesus to count your blessings.

Today I’m choosing to count mine.
