Well, the Republicans are 130 miles away at a business-sponsored debate, but I can still smell the sulfur. Or maybe it’s just the pollution emanating from Detroit.
Some highlights thus far:
- Tom Tancredo answers every question with ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION! ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION! I’M NOT SAYING IT’S MEXICO’S FAULT, BUT ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION!
- Fred Thompson is meeting those low expectations.
- Rudy Giuliani is in his own world and making Mitt Romney look credible. That’s scary.
What surprised me most about the debate was the assumption that Corporate America is somehow more organic, more agile, and less bureaucratic than the federal government. Anyone who’s ever tried to fire someone or spend more than $50 from the old “petty cash” fund will tell you that it’s easier to deliver mail than it is to figure out most corporate infrastructures.
If Corporate America — the biggest example of institutionalized mediocrity and short-term thinking — is the answer to illegal immigration and the health care crisis, I’m not sure the Republicans are asking the right questions.
PS – Sometimes politics is cringe-worthy, especially when you see these leaders in the light of day.
