I always hear that HR people are risk averse.
It’s a stupid and mediocre insult. Most people are adverse to risk. Human beings sit on our butts. We don’t change until we need to change. That’s life. No one likes a hassle. Why cause problems when the status quo just feels so damn good?
My real complaint about HR people is that we teach awful change management courses. We pretend like we know how to lead people through difficult times. And when the shit hits the fan in our own organizations, or we are challenged to do something differently, we take the easy way out.
We aren’t risk adverse. We are cowards.
And you can’t do great things in HR — and in life — if you are afraid of what’s new.
