Soliciting on Facebook

I have a friend who hates to be solicited on Facebook. He thinks that raising money for charity on Facebook is intrusive, pushy, and flies in the face of what it means to be social. While peer pressure might be an effective way to raise money, it violates his sensibilities.

I get it. Sorta. Except I’m raising money in Lucy’s memory. I miss that kitty so much. This is one of the ways I’m dealing with this weird grief. And you don’t have to donate — but now I’m not soliciting on Facebook because I’m the woman who complained about people who sell Girl Scout Cookies at work. I don’t want to be a hypocrite.

I wonder — are coworkers reaching out to you on social websites (instead of at work) to raise money and sell shit? Do you feel pressured to donate? How do you respond?

I’m curious, yo.
