This week’s shout out goes to Mary Ellen Slayter.
Mary Ellen is the Senior Editor at Smartbrief and a former career columnist with The Washington Post. More importantly, she is a champion of the HR social media community, a friend to all HR bloggers, and a really great woman.
I’ve known Mary Ellen for nearly two years. Last year, she asked me to join the SmartBrief on Workforce advisory board. Before the advisory board, I contributed to the Smartbrief on Workforce newsletter and site. (Go sign up. It’s awesome.) I finally met Mary Ellen in real life at SHRM09 in New Orleans. We had a great time, and she took me to a bar with a carousel. I’m not fancy, but it was one of the highlights of my trip.
You can’t ask for a more down-to-earth woman. Mary Ellen knows how to write, how to edit, and how to make HR bloggers into better writers.
Mary Ellen and I were trying to coordinate a tweet-up that didn’t work out, and in the midst of the conversation, she mentioned that Louisiana SHRM holds an amazing conference. I looked into the program and contacted Robin Schooling and asked if LASHRM10 needed an official blogger. No one ever really needs a blogger, but I was graciously invited to cover the event.
I’ll be at The Cajundome for the next few days learning about EEOC compliance, FMLA laws, and ADA stuff. I’m sure there will be talk about employment branding & whatnot. Honestly, I am thrilled that Mary Ellen motivated me to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. Lafayette, Louisiana? You better believe it.
Mary Ellen is an amazing woman and she inspires me to be a better writer and HR professional. This is why she gets my shout out, today.
