The coal mining tragedy in West Virginia breaks my heart. The news doesn’t get better, either. There are no bright spots. I can’t imagine the toll this is taking on the families and the community.
I keep hearing that safety regulations for the coal mining industry are written with the blood of workers, and I wondered if coal mining is America’s most dangerous job. Turns out that it’s one of those most dangerous jobs, but there are more dangerous ways you can earn money.
Do you have family members who work in the mining industry? Do you work in an industry with high incident rates?
I wonder how much worker safety is on the minds of executives and leaders in these environments. We often hear that safety is job #1, and that our employees are our most precious asset, but I’m not sure that is true as the economy putters along.
Sad. All so sad.
